Deep breathing techniques Sukha Purvaka Pranayama and Buteyko Breathing compared

I didn’t know that much about the two techniques Sukha Purvaka Pranayama and Buteyko and then last week watched a youtube video where host Mikhaila Peterson interviews James Nestor about how breathing the wrong way is bad for your health and tips on how to correct your breathing.

Since I’m a fan of breathing techniques, you can find my popular manual breathing blog post here, I decided to research into these two techniques and pick them apart for you.

About the Buteyko Breathing technique.

Buteyko breathing was developed by russian clinical therapist Dr Buteyko in the 1950’s.  He found the technique helpful for his own breathing problems and developed a theory around breathing more deeply.   

In a nutshell you breath out, exhale then stop yourself inhaling and hold your breath until you feel the urge to breath in again.

About Sukha Purvaka Pranayama

This is an ancient yoga breathing technique in the simplest form, Breath in, (inhale) for 6 seconds, hold your breath for 6 seconds then breath out (exhale) for 6 seconds.

I’ve come to the conclusion that they are both very similar, Yoga is a spiritual approach developed thousands of years ago, whereas Buteyko is an attempt to study and research the benefits of Yogic deep breathing in a scientific manner.

The benefits of deep breathing in this way

Reduce anxiety, hyperventilating and treat physical issues like asthma, sleep apnea and COPD.

Deep breathing helped me and I felt glad that this alternative approach is well used and even has specialist training to become a Buteyko trainer.
